Dave Warwick, Founding Brewer

DaveThreeNBDave Warwick has worked in the beer industry since 1997 with jobs in almost every aspect of the business. In 2006 he gained acceptance to the highly competitive craft brewing apprentice program at Rock Bottom Breweries and rapidly climbed the ranks of the successful brewpub chain. After only two years of being an assistant, Dave was given his own brewery in Westminster, CO. After many successes in Colorado, Dave relocated to the east coast and was the Brewmaster for the Rock Bottom Brewery in Arlington, VA for three years. After training under four diverse brewmasters, and then after operating four highly successful breweries, Dave has become a versatile, well-rounded brewer with a library of market proven recipes. At the 2012 World Beer Cup, Dave collected his first medal when he was awarded a bronze medal for his “Dude! Where’s My Vespa?” Espresso Stout. He won a gold medal at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival for his “Nikki’s Gluten Free Honey Pale Ale.” Since brewing at Three Notch’d Brewing Company, Dave has won a bronze medal at the 2014 Virginia Craft Brewers Cup for his “Oats McGoats Oatmeal Stout” and a bronze medal at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival for his “Hydraulion” Irish Red Ale.

George Kastendike, CEO & Founder

George discovered his love for craft beer while in Business School at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. After spending 15 years in various corporate and entrepreneurial roles, George conceived and founded Three Notch’d Brewing Company in 2012 and serves as Chairman and CEO. From 2008-2014, George served in several roles at Encell Technology – a Silicon Valley backed energy storage and management company. Kastendike supported executive leadership, business development, product development and fund raising efforts as Encell secured its Series A, B and C financing rounds.  George served as VP of Business Development and Sales of Encell and President of the Company’s Battery Management Business Division where he built a full-scale advanced battery management business and eventually sold the unit to a private venture group. Prior to Encell, Kastendike served in various roles with AT&T and IBM from 2000-2010. Outside of work, George enjoys spending time with his wife, Lindy, and his twin children – George and Olivier. Kastendike has a BBA in Finance and is a graduate of Emory University’s Goizueta Business School with an MBA and concentration in Finance and Banking.

Scott Roth, President & Founder

Scott got his start in the beer world over 15 years ago when he began bartending at the age of 18 at a local country club in his hometown of Fleetwood, PA. While completing his Engineering degree at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, Scott worked in just about every part of the restaurant industry, and during his final year he landed a management position at an Irish Pub that had 46 draft lines. It was at that pub that his love of craft beer and the restaurant industry were solidified. After graduating and meeting his now wife, Kristin, the Roth’s began their search to open up a pub of their own. One year later McGrady’s Irish Pub was born, and it was in one of the booths at that very pub that the concept for Three Notch’d evolved, along with many product testing sessions of course.
Scott lives in Charlottesville with his wife Kristin and their two sons, Evan (age 3) and Tyler (age 1).

Derek Naughton, Director of Sales & Founder

NaughtonFamilyDerek comes to us from Ireland with a wealth of experience as a traveled beer drinker and also an excellent business operator. Derek currently helps lead all marketing and product strategy at Three Notch’d and is a co-founder of the Company. Derek is also a director with Silverchair Information Systems and prior to this he was working as a senior I.T. Consultant with Dominion Digital. Derek’s background (way back) was in the Service Industry, bar tending, waiting tables and managing restaurants and always wanted to return to these roots. His love of beer and interacting with people, (and having such good friends with the know how) helping to open a brewery with great local craft beer in mind was a no brainer. Derek has lived in Charlottesville for 10 years with his wife Jayme and three boys, Finton (7), Driscoll (6), and Senan (4). When not working at Silverchair or Three Notch’d, or spending time with his family, Derek loves to play soccer or can be caught having pints around town in any of the great bars and restaurants.

Rob Mullin, Production Manager

Rob_websiteRob is the latest addition to the Three Notch’d Brew Team. Born in Munich, Germany and the descent of a long line of moonshiners, bootleggers, and speakeasy owners, Rob Mullin was a political campaign manager in a former life. D.C. burn-out and a chance encounter with a home-brew starter kit changed that forever. A true Renaissance man, Rob got his start in the beer industry driving trucks for Old Dominion Brewing Company right here in Virginia. Under the tutelage of John Mallet (Bell’s) and Ron Barchet (Victory), Rob began his new life as a craft brewer bouncing from Virginia to Manhattan to the Tap Rock Restaurant and Brewery in New Jersey. In 2002, he escaped the East Coast to become the head brewer at Grand Teton Brewing  Co., immediately shifting the company’s focus from traditional English-style ales to more hop-forward styles associated with the region. 

Throughout his career at Grand Teton, Rob has risen to C.O.O, become the Vice President of the state brewer’s guild, and increased brewing capacity from 2,000 to 10,000 barrels a year.  He also won 4 World Beer Cup medals, 13 Great American Beer Festival Medals, and 26 North American Beer Awards Medals.

Mary Morgan, Head Brewer, Harrisonburg

Mary Morgan is the Blonde behind the brews! Three Notch’d is proud to have Mary on board as one of Virginia’s Elite Female Brewers. Mary was the Vice President of Harrisonburg Homebrewers Club for a full year before stepping down to focus efforts on Three Notch’d, she has integrated her relationships into the brewery through collaborations with homebrewers and local restaurants. She’s been delivering creative, clean, and balanced brews since taking the position in May.  Mary’s passion for brewing developed from her scientific roots as a high school Biology and Chemistry teacher. She prides herself in using unique local ingredients whenever possible. Come by the Harrisonburg taproom every Friday for a pint of Mary’s latest creation!

Stefan McFayden, Head Brewer, RVA Collab House

Stefan grew up in the north side of Richmond, only two miles down the road from our brewery in Scott’s Addition. Upon graduation from JMU, he moved back to Richmond and picked up homebrewing, where he quickly found his passion and worked on turning the hobby into a career. Stefan’s dedication to homebrewing and eagerness to learn helped him develop an array of recipes, from IPA’s to sours, with a strong interest in saisons/farmhouse ales. With a deep passion to create balanced and flavorful recipes, while pushing the boundaries of traditional styles, Stefan brings creativity, the proper skill set, and drive for making quality beer. Combined with a positive attitude and warm personality, Stefan is the perfect fit for continuing the collaboration culture within the Three Notch’d family. When not making incredible beer, you can find him enjoying the outdoors or hanging out at a local brewery or food joint.
